Sham El-Nessim
Sham El-Nessim, meaning “Smelling the Zephyr,” is a popular festival in Egypt, celebrated annually on the day following Coptic Christian (Orthodox Christian church based in Egypt) Easter Monday. This ancient tradition celebrates the arrival of spring with families and friends gathering for picnics in parks or by the Nile River. They enjoy the blossoming flowers and preparing traditional foods like salted fish and coloured eggs, symbolising fertility and new life. The custom of “Fasikh,” salting and drying fish, persists from ancient times, believed to protect people from evil spirits and ensure good health. Children fly kites and play traditional games. This festival unites Egyptians of all religions to celebrate and connect with their community each year.
